Cakin Night

Cakin Night was a forerunner of the American "Trick or Treat" tradition carried out in northern England during Halloween. Children would tour their neighbourhood in costumes and masks singing "Cake Cake, Copper Copper" and were given a piece of cake if an adult guessed their identity, or a few pennies ("coppers") if the guess was wrong. Nowadays, adults in the village of Stannington near Sheffield carry on the tradition by dressing in costumes at their local pub. "We were trick ot treating long before the Americans," said one costumed vampire.
