Dry stone is returning to many parts of northern England, for economic as well as environmental reasons. The walls, carefully constructed by skilled stone workers like this waller from Derbyshire, can support bird, insect and wildflower populations, as well as animals like weasels and bats. Built well, they can also last for hundreds of years, whereas fencing often only survives the weather for a decade or two. |
